Telomeres in Arabidopsis thaliana are characterized by 2-7Kb of tandem TTTAGGG repeats (similar to Humans-TTAGGG). Telomeres in Arabidopsis, like all other known systems, are capped off by a short 3’ overhang, called the G-overhang. This G-overhang serves as the docking site for Telomerase to extend telomeres during the S-phase of the cell cycle. During all other stages, the G-overhang is made inaccessible by folding into the secondary structure called the T-loop. During all stages of the cell cycle there are a variety of double and single strand binding proteins that help telomeres perform their critical functions.
